Olusegun Mimiko declared Ondo State’s new executive governor

Dr Olusegun Mimiko, New Governor of Ondo StateAkure - The Labour Party governorship candidate in the April 14 election in Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has been declared the lawful winner of the election by the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, thereby nullifying the election of PDP candidate, and current occupier of the state governement house, Dr Olusegun Agagu.

But in a swift reaction to the verdict Dr Agagu told newsmen in Akure yesterday that he accepted the judgment but would proceed to the Appeal Court as required by the Constitution.

Visa fraud - Man in trouble with the law

Abuja - The long arm of the law recently caught up with a visa racketeer, Johnson Iven, who was on Thursday docked at an Abuja Upper Area Court for visa fraud.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria report, Iven was charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating. Iven of No. 7, Old Market road Garki, Abuja, was alleged to have collected N750,000 from one Mr Chukwudi Ezeagbalu in 2007 to assist him in obtaining a Polish visa.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Helicopters to the rescue - The new way to transport money in Nigeria

Abia - Nigerians Banks have deployed new creative ways of transporting money, using helicopters as a substitute for armed bullion vans,  following incessant robbery attacks in recent times. Hopefully, robbers will not find a way to checkmate this new move.

In fact, it was gathered that a helipad was specifically built for the helicopters to land and take off with money.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this move by banks became necessary following rampant attacks on bullion vans by gunmen which sources said were more than 10 in the last three months.

Immigration - UK Embassy lifts visa application restriction

Abuja - The British High Commission in Nigeria has has lifted the restrictions on its visa service with respect from Tuesday July 22, 2008.

The High Commission’s office in Abuja, through a press statement signed by Oladele Oladokun of its Public Affairs section said on Wednesday, that the resort to implementation of the restrictions on its service was due to unavoidable technical problems at the Deputy High Commission in Lagos.

The release stated that all categories of visa applications can now be submitted, adding that, the British High Commission had reiterated that its customer’s should know that it was still being forced to run a limited service for first time travelers to the UK.

IBB lectures Nigerians on how to conduct free and fair election

General Ibrahim Babangida, Former Nigerian DictatorMinna- Former Nigeria military  dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) has made it clear to Nigerians that his administration conducted the most credible elections in the country since Independence, and as such we should learn from it.

According to him, if not for the cancellation of the result of the June 12, 1993 presidential election presumed to have been won by late Chief MKO Abiola,  Nigerians will agree with him that the elections conducted under his watch between 1989 and 1992 were generally free, fair, acceptable and credible.
